Kim Byung Jong, “life painter” and master of Korean art, wins the “5th An Gyeon Art and Culture Award”.

Kim Byung Jong, a “life painter” whose works evoke the themes of life and nature, won the 5th An Gyeon  Art Culture Award on the 28th.

The An Gyeon Art Culture Awards selects and awards great figures in the art world with outstanding achievements and creative, original works while inheriting and developing the artistic spirit of An Gyeon from Seosan, who drew the world-renowned masterpiece Mongyudowondo. It is recognized to be a highly honorable award in Korea, as only one individual is selected per year.

Artist Kim Byung Jong (photo, 68, honorary professor at Seoul National University, chair professor at Gachon University), who has taught on the modernization of traditional art at Seoul National University over the past 40 years, consistently donated his works to the island region throughout his life, and more than 100 million won to UNICEF as an international relief fund for children suffering from natural disasters and disputes in Afghanistan and Haiti.

Additionally, Kim, who has held more than 30 solo exhibitions both at home and abroad and established a unique style of painting based on traditional aesthetics, presented works such as “Fool Jesus,” “Song of Life,” “The Scattering Pine Pollen”, and donated 400 works produced throughout his life to the Namwon City Kim Byung Jong Museum of Art.

Kim’s works are housed in the British Museum and the Royal Ontario Museum, and he presented his painting to Chinese President Xi Jingping during his state visit, making headlines.

Painter Kim Byung Jong said, “I would like to express my deep gratitude to the An Gyeon Memorial Society and the judges for allowing me this honor,” adding, “I will make every effort to continue the tradition of this excellent award.”

Dana Kim Byung Jong is Korea’s representative “literary painter”. He is regarded as an artist leading the modernization and globalization of Korean painting across diverse media using modern expressions, while preserving the unique spirit of Korea. Furthermore, Kim takes the lead in promoting the excellence of Korean painting both at home and abroad by participating in world-class art fairs such as FIAC in France, Art Basel, and Chicago.
