The following describes the ASTM/ISO viscosity grades of industrial bearing lubricants. Figure 13. Viscosity grades of industrial lubricants. ISO Viscosity System Conventional Antirust and Antioxidant Lubricants Conventional Antirust and Antioxidant (R&O) lubricants are the most common industrial lubricants. These lubricants can be applied to Timken® bearings used in various industrial applications without special conditions. Table 24.

High speed and/or low temperature applications require lower viscosity grades.Extreme Pressure (EP) Industrial Gear Oil Extreme pressure gear oil can lubricate Timken® bearings in most heavy-duty industrial equipment. They can withstand the unusual impact loads common in heavy-duty equipment. Table 25.

Extreme pressure (EP) additives (1)-load class 15.8 kg. Viscosity index min. 80 pour point max. -10 °C viscosity grade ISO/ASTM 100, 150, 220, 320, 4601) ASTM D 2782 Industrial Extreme Pressure (EP) gear oil is composed of highly refined petroleum plus corresponding inhibitor additives. They should not contain materials that can corrode or abrade the bearings.

Inhibitors should provide long-term anti-oxidation protection and protect bearings from corrosion in the presence of moisture. The lubricating oil should be able to avoid foaming during use and have good waterproof properties. Extreme pressure additives can also prevent scratches under boundary lubrication conditions. The recommended viscosity grade range is very wide. High temperature and/or low speed applications usually require higher viscosity grades. Low temperature and/or high speed applications require a lower viscosity grade.
