Congratulations on the authorization of the Professional Doctorate in International Language Education

Recently, the State Council Academic Degrees Committee and the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China officially released the Subject Catalogue of Postgraduate Education (2022) (hereinafter referred to as the “new catalog”)

Recently, the State Council Academic Degrees Committee and the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China officially released the Subject Catalogue of Postgraduate Education (2022) (hereinafter referred to as the “new catalog”), which will be implemented from 2023. In the new catalog, the former professional degree category of “Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages” is renamed as “International Chinese Language Education” (course code 0453). Furthermore, the professional doctoral degree in International Chinese Language Education is added, which marks that the coherent cultivation system of undergraduate, master, and doctoral degrees in international Chinese language education has been officially established. It is of great significance in the development and discipline construction of international Chinese language education.

Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL) was established in 2007, and up to now, the number of domestic universities with the master’s degree authorization has increased from 24 at the beginning to 198, and has trained more than 70,000 international Chinese language education professionals, including 15,000 local Chinese teachers from 72 countries. This has effectively filled the gap of Chinese teaching positions at home and abroad, raised the academic level and professionalism of the international Chinese language teaching team, promoted language and cultural exchanges and cooperation, and enhanced the understanding and friendship between China and people from all over the world.

As the global “Chinese fever” and “China fever” continue to rise, Chinese language education around the world has entered a critical period of upgrading and transformation. There is an urgent need for a large number of high-level Chinese and foreign professionals with doctoral degrees to further advance the quality and efficiency of international Chinese language education worldwide so as to achieve its advanced and innovative development. To promote the development and discipline construction of international Chinese language education in the new era, and to respond to the widespread calls from experts and professionals in the related fields at home and abroad, the Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL) Education Supervisory Committee has applied for the authorization of the professional doctoral degree of “International Chinese Language Education” and submitted the application to the Office of the State Council Academic Degrees Committee for research and deliberation. At the same time, the Education Supervisory Committee has also applied to rename the professional degree category of “Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages” in the Subject Catalogue of degree conferment and talent cultivation (2011) to “International Chinese Language Education”. On the 37th conference of the State Council Academic Degrees Committee, it adopted the name of “International Chinese Language Education” in the new version of the catalog and approved corresponding doctoral degree.

The coherent cultivation system of undergraduate, master, and doctoral degrees for international Chinese language education professionals will play a crucial role in bringing together various resources to support the disciplines construction of international Chinese language education, achieve the organic unity of its career development and discipline construction, and facilitate in building a more open, inclusive and standardized international Chinese language education system.
