The problem Of Obesity: The Answer Of The Innovative Spin-Off MAGISNAT

February 07 22:01 2023

Meetings continue between MAGISNAT researchers (www.magisnat-rd.com) and the committee of the Fondazione Policlinico Agostino Gemelli IRCCS from Rome, Italy (http://magisnat-rd.com/first-week-of-february-2023/).

At today’s meeting, the attention of those present focused on a widespread issue, one of the main concerns in health care internationally, namely obesity (https://www.jpmh.org/index.php/jpmh/article/view/2757/1021).

To better understand this issue, it is good to specify what is meant by obesity.

Obesity is an excessive accumulation of fatty tissue. Excess body weight is classically determined on the basis of a person’s BMI (body mass index): BMI = weight (kg)/height (m)2.  A BMI of 30 kg/m2 is recognized as the threshold for obesity, while a BMI between 25 and 29.9 kg/m2 is used to identify overweight people.

The severity of this dietary problem is not only to be associated with excessive weight gain, but also with related complications—such as heart and metabolic dysfunctions, diabetes, disability, malignancies, and premature death. The latter are the issues of greatest concern to the scientific community, leading MAGISNAT and the Fondazione Policlinico Agostino Gemelli IRCCS to discuss them on this specific occasion.

Treating obesity is, therefore, of great importance to researchers around the world. However, it is important not only to treat this disease, but also to carry out preventive actions to avoid reaching the worst stages.

In fact, several solutions have been proposed, such as following a healthy lifestyle, following dietary plans for weight loss, and exercising.

Of all the approaches listed above, researchers and professors at the meeting focused on the beneficial effects of following a healthy lifestyle and, in particular, a Mediterranean lifestyle.

You may ask: Why precisely the Mediterranean lifestyle?

The answer is very simple: because it is a complete lifestyle. Its main feature is following a Mediterranean diet, that is, a predominantly plant-based diet, with consumption of oily fish and unrefined grains. Meat consumption is limited, and it would be better to prefer white meat. Wine consumption is also included, but with moderation: maximum one glass per day.

In addition to diet, this lifestyle also involves moderate physical activity, thus helping to control one’s weight and keep the body healthy, as well as positively affecting mood.

Another important aspect of the Mediterranean lifestyle is socialization. Studies have shown that socially active people have a lower chance of contracting certain diseases.

Living according to the Mediterranean lifestyle is characterized by many convivial situations—for example, even eating together helps people feel better.

Thus, a set of factors that bring well-being to people’s bodies and also reduce the rate of contracting certain diseases, such as obesity.

These are simple steps indeed, nevertheless, they do allow people to lead a life of health and well-being.
